The Story
Bill Bittinger (Dabney Coleman), egotistical host of a local talk show at WBFL-TV in Buffalo, New York, is trying to make it in the big leagues with aspirations of national acclaim. He is obnoxious, insensitive, and will do whatever it takes to succeed.
Unable to keep Bill under control, the station manager Karl Shub (Max Wright) and show producer/director JoJo White (Joanna Cassidy) bring in assistant Wendy Killian (Geena Davis) to keep a watchful eye on him.
The excellent cast is complimented by John Fielder (best known as the neurotic Mr. Peterson from The Bob Newhart Show) as Woody, Bill's floor director, a sweet guy who chooses to believe that Bill really has a heart of gold (which he doesn't, of course). Meshach Taylor (later known for Designing Women) is Tony, the assistant director. Charlie Robinson (who went on to Night Court) played make-up man Newdell, who rarely takes any of Bill's gruff.
Eleven Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe win, it is sad that this stellar sitcom only lasted two seasons.
